Why were the 4 year olds so high performing?

The reflection activity below is your chance to extend your thinking beyond the surprise and bemusement of the experiment results and start to unpack your thoughts about the 'why' behind what brings groups together in unity and what gets in the way.

We are going to explore this in much greater depth in the upcoming sessions.

Why do you think the 4 year olds were so high performing?

Reflect on the 4 year old behaviour. How do you think this contributed to the group united performance and overall result? Human thinking and behaviour is always accompanied by feeling. What do you think the 4 year olds participating might have been thinking and feeling?

Why do you think the business students were so low performing?

The Research Video identified the strategic aspects of how the business student groups behaved and co-ordinated themselves and the observed shared thinking process. What underlying thoughts and feelings at the individual level could have contributed to the group's poor performance? How might these have impacted the behaviour at the individual level.

Why do you think CEOs were the second best performing groups?

And no, it is not because they are smart! Remember the 4 year olds' performance. These four year old were not all destined to be CEOs, they may have had one amongst them, but more likely they would also become future nurses, builders and hospitality staff, and perhaps even business students! So what could be similar about CEO thinking and behaviour to that of 4 year olds? Again think about the underlying feelings that could be contributing to the group performance results.
